General objectives
Formal and operational mathematical thinking is important in both industrial
and economic contexts. Acquiring mathematical knowledge not only widens one’s
horizons but also leads to developing innovative ideas and interdisciplinarity.
The mathematics course is focused on the needs of various modules within the
tourism bachelor programme such as statistics and economics, where knowledge
of mathematics is required for a large number of applications.
The students are expected to be able to
- perform the basic arithmetic operations.
- recall the basics of function theory.
- solve linear equations and linear systems of equations.
- graphically display parabolas.
- solve simple quadratic equations.
- perform logarithmic operations.
- apply simple interest, compound interest, and annuity calculation to exemplary
tasks.
- explain the basic terms of differential calculus such as slope and limit.
- differentiate polynomial and exponential functions.
- apply differential calculus with respect to curve discussions to exemplary
tasks in economics.
- recognise integration as the inverse operation of differentiation.
- integrate basic algebraic functions.
- calculate the consumer and the producer surplus by means of integral calculus.
